Syrian lawyer and human rights defender Anwar al-Bunni is still detained in Adra Prison near Damascus .
He is being detained and prosecuted for promoting and defending human rights.
Mr. al-Bunni is one of many activists jailed for exercising their basic freedoms. His imprisonment is part of a persistent and generalized policy of repression conducted by the Syrian government to prevent human rights defenders from performing their legitimate and non-violent activities.
A final hearing in al-Bunni’s trial took place on April 3, 2007. The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on April 24, 2007. He could face up to five years in prison.
